By putting forward Puan Maharani for the presidency, the PDI-P wants to realize its plan for the 2024 elections to be contested by only two candidate pairs. This has the potential to sharpen polarization.
CLAIMING to be the party of the grass root people, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is actually a big-shot elitist party. When it comes to regeneration of the leadership, including the process of producing presidential candidates, the party has set itself up to preserve the lineage of Sukarno, particularly the blue blood of its current general chair Megawati Sukarnoputri.
