The World Cup attracts harsh criticism because of the lack of democracy and human rights in Qatar. This is all because of FIFA’s own leniency towards corruption.
THE World Cup feels different this time. The focus of the world is not only on the teams and megastars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, but also on democracy and human rights. This is all because the global event is being held in Qatar, a nation that has a law criminalizing LGBTQ community. Qatar is also known to limit women’s rights, and does not fully respect human rights.
