A pimp, or someone looking like a pimp but dressed like Colonel Sanders from Kentucky Fried Chicken asks about God. "What does God look like? And what does He do?"
In Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore (Umibe no Kafuka) the fictive Colonel leads Hoshino from the bordello to the edge of the woods. It is there that he suddenly poses this question. Hoshino is momentarily confused, and then replies, "Don't ask me. God's God. He's everywhere, watching what we do, judging whether it's good or bad."

Sugeng ndalu (good night)," 37-year-old Mahmudi Fukumoto greeted in Javanese, by telephone from Kawasaki, Japan, two weeks ago. Even though he has lived in Japan for the past 14 years, he has not forgotten his mother tongue. He spoke for almost an hour about his company, his project and his vision: to help match Indonesians who interned in Japan with the right local franchise companies back home.
It is a highly ambitious vision, given that he knows little Japanese, virtually no English and not much Indonesian. He is fluent only in his Javanese dialect. But he is determined to do something towards the development of his country, in his own way. "I dream of an economically-independent Indonesia," said Mahmudi.

We are living in an era where many professionals cross national borders in search of better jobs. However it does not mean that it's easy to do, nor is it necessarily smooth-sailing once we land the desired jobs. Usually the onus is on the job seekers to be well prepared to adjust and readjust their own expectations to match their employers' once they are employed. And the lower they move down the social rung, the murkier the whole process becomes.

A few days before hundreds of journalists from around the world gathered in Riga, capital of the Baltic nation of Latvia from May 2-6 to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, two of their colleagues in Africa were murdered. A few days later, the body of a year-long missing freelance reporter in Myanmar was found in a shallow-grave. In Indonesia, the 1996 murder of Yogyakarta-based journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, allegedly by local authorities, has never been resolved. He was killed while doing an investigative report on alleged corruption in the administration of the Bantul regency in Yogyakarta.
From year to year, the safety of journalists remain the main topic of discussion at conferences, as it has been every year since the United Nations launched its Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity in 2012. It is the first systematic global mechanism, designed to involve all relevant stakeholders on the issue of improving safety for journalists and ending impunity. But how effective has this initiative been so far?

PRESIDENT Joko Widodo's dream to have the trans-Java toll road in operation by 2018 could come to nothing. At present, there is still 615 kilometers to be completed. Many of the nine concession holders to operate the toll road have already thrown in the towel.
By the Lebaran holiday, the 117-kilometer Cikampek-Palimanan section will be in operation, but many other sections of the giant project have yet to be completed, and some have not even been started because of land acquisition problems. For example, in the Pemalang-Batang and Batang-Semarang sections, only 3 percent of the land has been acquired.

RUMORS of reshuffling the Working Cabinet have grown louder. Even when the reshuffle is the president's prerogative right, Vice President Jusuf Kalla wants Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to reorganize the formation of his ministers and senior officials. As many as 72.1 percent of respondents in last week's Tempo.co poll also believe this is the right time to reshuffle the cabinet, after only eight months in office.
In another survey conducted at the same time, respondents believe Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani is the most suitable to be replaced. The reasons given by respondents were similar. Overall they believe Puan was appointed minister at the request of her mother, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri. According to respondents, Jokowi would be perceived as decisive and would lose his image as the 'puppet president' if he has the courage to fire Puan.

According to a 2012 World Health Organization (WHO) report, life expectancy in Indonesia is ranked a low 117 out of 193 countries surveyed. This shows how far we still lag behind even among other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, except for Myanmar and Cambodia.
Hanibal Hamidi, Assistant Deputy Minister for Health Resources at the Development of Backward Areas Ministry, tried to overcome this problem directly at the villages. "Ideally, one village should have one doctor," said Hanibal. His ideas are contained in his ministry's Healthy Villages program, which are the results of Hanibal's four-year research.

Many common behaviors are now defined as deviant in North Aceh. For example, while it is relatively normal in other parts of Indonesia for men and women to ride tandem on motorcycles, in North Aceh such behavior is banned. While in other areas store owners regularly use mannequins to market their apparel, in North Aceh mannequins are prohibited for having the power to arouse male desire.
These and other rules have been brought about by the North Aceh Regional Legislative Council's (DPRK) passage of the the Qanun (bylaw) on Public Benefit and Order. "This qanun resulted from our discussion with ulama [religious leaders] to curb the spread of vice, which is currently spreading fast," said DPRK Speaker Tengku Fauzan two weeks ago.
