It is 2016. At 75, my life lying before me is far less than the life I've lived. This is the age when people are usually uneasy with the present, because in the 21st century the present is increasingly whipped along by the future. The technology surrounding us is not there for right now: fast trains, solar energy cars, hologram communication... life seems to be moving without pausing in the present.
But nostalgia is there in the cracks.
The film industry in Indonesia is going through a golden period. Production of national films have gone up sharply compared to two decades ago. In 2014, the highest-ever number of films were produced: 115 titles. This is much higher than the number of films produced from 1991 to 2001, which was a total of 94.
The expansion in the film industry is getting the support of Joko Widodo's government through his 10th economic policy packet launched last Thursday. One of the points in the policy is to extricate the film industry and its related distribution business from the negative investment list (DNI), under Presidential Decree No. 39/2014 on the list of open and closed businesses in the field of capital investment.
SHANDRA Woworuntu still remembers the day she received an email from the office of President Barrack Obama in September 2015, offering her to become a member of the US Advisory Council on Human Traffickingthe first of its kind. The email also requested for her biodata.
For a long spell, Shandra was in a state of disbelief. "I didn't even pay attention to it," recalled the 39-year-old resident of New York City three weeks ago. She sent in her data only after she was convinced that the email was indeed from the White House.
Every year, Reporters without Borders announces the results of their findings on the number of journalists worldwide who have been killed, threatened and harassed during the year. Accordingly, last year 67 journalists and media workers were killed in the course of doing their jobs, bringing the total number of journalists killed since 2005 to 787 people. Meanwhile the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that in 2014, 119 media workers were kidnapped and more than 800 arrested.
Only last week in India, according to the CPJ, journalist Malini Subramaniam on her way to work was attacked by a mob pelting her car with rocks. She had been reporting on human rights abuses in the conflict between Maoist groups and the government in Chhattisgarh. And who can forget the kidnapping and massacre of 34 local journalists in Mindanao, the Philippines?
Thai Foreign Minister DonPramudwinai made his first visit to Indonesia, meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi. Both ministers agreed to intensify relationship between the two largest economies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), following the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). They also discussed three particular issues: trade cooperation, maritime borders and combating terrorism.
"We are strongly committed to improving bilateral economic cooperation," said Retno at the foreign ministry in Jakarta on February 11. Indonesia wants to upgrade collaboration in the strategic industry sector with Thailand, which is currently using Dirgantara's Indonesia-made C-212-400 planes.
The Aceh provincial government has placed on a ban on Valentine's Day celebrations this year. Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Saaduddin Djamal said celebration of the February 14 holiday was vulgar and promiscuous. "No youth or Muslim in Banda Aceh should celebrate Valentine's Day in any way. It opposes sharia law," she said on February 11.
Illiza said the local government would begin disseminating the ban through social media. "We started the hashtag, #ValentineBukanUntukKami ('Valentine's is not for us') on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram," she said. The government is also urging hotels, cafes and malls not to participate in Valentine's Day celebrations.
The grave of Sheikh Yusuf al-Makassari, a major Islamic scholar from Gowa, South Sulawesi, is located on a small sandy hill in Fasley Bay, not far from his home of Kampung Makassar, Cape Town. Based on Lontar Bolangngan (papyrus) documents, Sheikh Yusuf was born in Gowa on the 8th of the month of Shawwal, 1036, on the Islamic hijri calendar (July 3, 1626), and died on the 22nd of Dhul-Qa'dah, 1109 Hijri (May 23, 1699) at the age of 73. He was initially exiled to Sri Lanka in September 1684, along with his two wives, children and several students.
Sheikh Yusuf was exiled by the Dutch after being arrested in Cirebon, West Java, for his role in helping Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa oppose colonization. At the time, Sheikh Yusuf was not only the son-in-law of the Sultan, but also the highest-ranking Islamic scholar, or ulama, in the kingdom. "He was highly involved with the political dynamics in the Banten Kingdom. He was an ulama who was also an activist, as was Abdullah An-Sinkili, Sheikh Yusuf's teacher in the Aceh Kingdom," explained Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, author of the book The Network of Middle Eastern Scholars and the Indonesian Archipelago in the 17th and 18th Centuries.
Mysteriously missing from most media reports on the controversy over how to develop the giant Masela gas field is the danger posed by a 2,000-3,000-meter-deep undersea trench, which lies between the concession and the remote Tanimbar islands in the Arafura Sea.
Part of the quake-prone Indian Ocean fault line that skirts Sumatra and Java and curls around the southern coast of eastern Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara island chain, it is one major reason why Australian firm Woodside refuses to pipe gas from its Sunrise field to Timor-Leste.
Workers always bear the brunt of any economic recession. Companies such as Ford Motor Indonesia, Panasonic Lighting, Toshiba Consumer Products Indonesia and Chevron Pacific Indonesia have begun streamlining their operations, affecting some 1,300 workers in Jakarta and its environs, as well as in South Kalimantan and South Sulawesi, per labor ministry data.
Massive layoffs have become an exceedingly sensitive issue for Joko Widodo's government as it can be seen as a failure to provide employment for its people, particularly when the layoffs are linked to the president's campaign promises.
Jokowi's Criticism
PERHAPS there is some truth in President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's statement on Press Day, February 9, when he criticized online media for being for careless in checking the accuracy of reported news. The online media has so much freedom that one can find anything: from news that has not been verified to sources that are unclear. Maybe this is because it is a new era, where the Internet cannot be contained or censored.
Kornelius Kodi Mete has only been chief of the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) health department for the last four months, but like his predecessor, he is determined to continue improving the health care system in the province through various programs. He believes that many people in NTT today are more aware of their health, so that it is now up to the government to provide them with the good service they seek.
But improvement in the system needs a great deal of effort, not only from public institutions, but in cooperation with civil society organizations. Thus, Kornelius welcomes the initiatives from the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Health Systems Strengthening (AIPHSS) and the Health Ministry's offer of assistance to local governments. This includes perfecting the referral system, facilitating accreditation for community health centers (Puskesmas) and long distance learning for nurses and midwives.
FITRIA Sumarni did not expect the ten visitors on Friday morning two weeks ago. Bangka's Ahmadiyah representative received the guests at the Ahmadiyah secretariat in Srimenanti village, Sungailiat subdistrict, Bangka.
The visitors comprised representatives of local mass organizations and the local government. Bangka's Military District 0413 chief Lt. Col. Uten Simbolon led the retinue. Fitria said the group introduced themselves as the mediation team to rejection Ahmadiyah followers in the vicinity. "They had given no previous notice that they'd come by," said the head of the Ahmadiyah advocacy team last week.
THE agriculture ministry has been blamed for knowing about an alleged chicken cartel among 12 breeding companies. Livestock and animal health director-general at the ministry, Muladno witnessed the agreement signed by breeding firms to conduct early culling. In a circular signed by Muladno at the end of November 2015, the circular also set the percentage of breeding chickens that had to be culled by each firm. Instead of returning to a stable price level, however, the price of day-old chickens and that of live ones soared after the two million chickens were slaughtered. "To achieve balance and normal prices, the only method is early culling," Muladno told Tempo reporter Ayu Prima Sandi over the telephone last week. Muladno was in Yogyakarta when the interview was held.
The police have exposed a network of human kidney brokers who capitalize on the shortage of kidney donors. One group masterminded by Kwok Herry Susanto targets patients at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). According to RSCM Director Czeresna Heriawan Soejono, the transplant procedures at this state-run hospital are strictly regulated to prevent abuses. Here is how Herry's plot works.
This year, Indonesia and India mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. However, the ties between the two nations have existed much longer, predating the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of India. These connections span social, cultural, religious, economic, and trade aspects. But do those close ties of the past have any bearing on the present relationship? Why is there no direct flight between the capitals of the two countries?
