Rahma Isna Saidah, 25, says she will never forget 'herding' 15 ducks down a mountain, through forests, over a lake and onto a motorbike last year on her way to the animal husbandry office in Lindu, Central Sulawesi.
"Ducks are susceptible to stress," Rahma said in Jakarta two weeks ago. "Sadly, one of them died on the arduous journey."
Riri Riza's love of his profession is manifested not only in the quality of the films he produces, but also in his dedication to spreading the word through teaching. For close to five years, Riri, 45, has taught at the MakassarScreen.coman institute for future cinematographers in the region. Riri, a native of Makassar, visits his hometown several times a year, to share his knowledge and experience, as well as to motivate more young people to go into the profession. "I do this to push filmmakers in eastern Indonesia to produce films," said Riri.
Participants of the MakassarScreen.com also come from Palu, Lombok and Papua. Riri, director of the iconic Laskar Pelangi ('Rainbow Warrior') and many international-award-winning movies, is convinced that film clubs in the provinces are able to raise Indonesia's visibility and reputation in the international world of film. He said they needed support, help to increase knowledge and technique, and the space to create.
For the past five years, the forestry ministry has been recruiting young people in a program called Bakti Rimbawan (Foresters Service), aimed at placing young graduates in forests to carry out conservation work. Besides to assist in prevention of deforestation, the main task of Bakti Rimbawan volunteers is to 'train' and involve communities living around forests to care for their environment.
The program has been inundated with applicants. About 5,000 youngsters have applied to be posted to different areas dotted around the country for a period of two years. In that time, the young foresters work under the management of the Forestry Management Unit (KPH).
