Riri Riza's love of his profession is manifested not only in the quality of the films he produces, but also in his dedication to spreading the word through teaching. For close to five years, Riri, 45, has taught at the MakassarScreen.coman institute for future cinematographers in the region. Riri, a native of Makassar, visits his hometown several times a year, to share his knowledge and experience, as well as to motivate more young people to go into the profession. "I do this to push filmmakers in eastern Indonesia to produce films," said Riri.
For the past five years, the forestry ministry has been recruiting young people in a program called Bakti Rimbawan (Foresters Service), aimed at placing young graduates in forests to carry out conservation work. Besides to assist in prevention of deforestation, the main task of Bakti Rimbawan volunteers is to 'train' and involve communities living around forests to care for their environment.
