Judges sentenced Urip Tri Gunawan to 20 years in jail, five more years than demanded by the prosecution. According to the panel of judges there were no mitigating factors to show leniency towards Urip—who was tried on charges of receiving a bribe of Rp6 billion. This is the heaviest sentence ever handed down by the Corruption Court.

The Munir murder case is entering a new stage. These coming weeks Maj. Gen. (ret) Muchdi Pr is standing trial. The former deputy of the State Intelligence Agency will be accused of having ordered the killing of rights activist Munir. If proven, Muchdi is liable to a death sentence or life imprisonment.
However, Muchdi’s defense counsel is convinced that he will escape. The documents used by the prosecutors are considered too weak to send this ex-Special Forces commander to prison. Now prosecutors are being challenged.

Because the case has expired, the Attorney General says he cannot continue the investigation into the “Balongan refinery case.” This means that Ginandjar Kartasasmita has escaped the clutches of the law over the corruption at the refinery construction project. The former Mining Minister had been accused of sharing responsibility for the project that resulted in the state losing US$200 billion. The case expired because the request from the AGO to Indonesian Military HQ to set up a legal interconnection team and question officers involved in legal cases was ignored. This saved Ginandjar.

From promising his victim to become a restaurant boss, to offering a prospective business in a foreign country. One victim was even persuaded to participate in a spiritual pilgrimage to Puhsarang, Kediri, East Java. There were at least 11 victims successfully deceived by the killer who ended up in a “mass burial” on a deserted piece of land near the killer’s house—after which their wealth was pillaged.
