A large sprawling city, a cosmopolis that turns everyone into both a stranger and a visitor liberated in nooks and crannies without addressesprobably this is what makes Paris and New York difficult to forget.
"There is never any ending to Paris and the memory of each person who has lived in it differs from that of any other. We always returned to it..."
Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama repeatedly excused himself to go to the bathroom, his way of keeping his temper in check during a grueling, hours-long interrogation by the Supreme Audit Agency's (BPK) investigation team.
The BPK had questions regarding the Jakarta government's 2014 purchase of land for the Sumber Waras Hospital in West Jakarta. "Whenever I started to get angry, I chose to go to the toilet rather than create another problem," Ahok said on Thursday last week.
It seems that Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, 49, better known as Ahok, has become interested in the fashion world. It is not because he wants to appear sartorially correct, but he figures that the attributes of a fashion industry would attract international attention to the capital city. Hence his support of the recently held Jakarta Fashion Week 2016, which he agreed to launch.
Norwegian Fishery Minister Elisabeth Aspaker met with her Indonesian counterpart, Susi Pudjiastuti, on November 24 at a meeting that resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on sustainable aquaculture.
Susi said demand for fish would continue to grow in line with an increasing population, which would be hard to service with only a capture fishery. "That's why we need to start sustainable aquaculture," she said.
The Supreme Audit Board's (BPK) audit of Jakarta's 2014 budget shows signs of irregularities and deviations. Although it was given an 'unqualified opinion' score, the audit has nevertheless triggered suspicions of a conflict of interest concerning Efdinal, the Jakarta BPK's director himself. When the BPK audit team set out to investigate the Jakarta administration's finances, Efdinal turned out to be the 'broker' of a disputed land case that the auditors were scrutinizing. Representing three residents of Pondok Kopi in eastern Jakarta, Efdinal had urged the Jakarta administration to buy a plot of land the size of a football field, which had formerly been a cemetery.
Indications of the abuse of authority became obvious when Efdinal turned the audit draft report as a weapon to 'negotiate.' To a number of Jakarta officials last April, Efdinal promised to erase any irregularities in the purchase of of the Sumber Waras Hospital land, which had been carried out by the Health Unit. The condition, once again, was that the Jakarta government purchase the cemetery land in Pondok Kopi. The extent of Efdinal's influence in the final audit report remains to be seen. But the fact is that last July, the BPK announced 70 suspected irregularities in the management of Jakarta's budget. The BPK questioned, among others, the purchase of the Sumber Waras Hospital as being too expensive at about Rp191 billion.

Disappointed by UOB Credit Card
I AM a holder of the UOB Platinum credit card numbered 4219 2020 0079 xxxx. On November 1, 2015, UOB attempted to contact me, but I failed to answer the call. I knew that there was a suspicious transaction when I was about to close the card on November 4. Had I not contacted UOB, I would never have realized that the card has been misused, despite being secured by means of 3D-secure and authorization code via mobile phone.
The forest fires in West Kalimantan these past three months have taken their toll on the local wildlife. Although not all the fauna managed to escape, some managed to find safe haven in neighboring forest areas. One of them is located in the middle of Kayong Agro Lestari (KAL) plantation, a subsidiary of Austindo Nusantara Jaya (ANJ).
The 3,884-hectare conservation area is now home to 24 orangutans. Six of them were brought there at the end of October, after the fire at Kuala Satong village, just outside of KAL's concession area, trapped them. "With the Yayasan International Animal Rescue Indonesia (YIARI) and the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), we saved those orangutans," said Nardiyono, KAL conservation manager. The six orangutans consisted of three mothers and their offsprings.
DESMOND Junaidi Mahesa and Masinton Pasaribu, two lawmakers on the House of Representative (DPR)'s law commission, made a break for the restroom when they saw reporters approaching after the commission's meeting last Wednesday. Another commission member, Erma Suryani Ranik, waved the journalists away.
Desmond told reporters to go to Commission Chairman Aziz Syamsuddin for clarification on ongoing talks regarding the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leadership selection. "We agreed to give information through a single point of contact," Desmond explained.

Magnus Ekbom stepped into a meeting room in a building on Jalan Rasuna Said in Kuningan, where the e-commerce company has just moved its offices a few months ago to accomodate his growing team.
At the helm of Lazada since 2012, Ekbom has ushered the online shopping platform to be the biggest in Indonesia. But he is not planning to take a breather just yet. For Ekbom, running an e-commerce company is like running in a marathon. "And we're only in the first couple of kilometers down the line," he said.
Two steps taken by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said on irregularities in Indonesia's energy sector have propelled him into the public limelight. The first move was his dissolution of Pertamina Energy Trading Ltd. (Petral) and having it audited. The results have now been submitted to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Last week, the KPK began its investigation on Petral, a subsidiary company of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina.
Hardly was the Petral case resolved when Sudirman made another sensational news. He reported House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Setya Novanto to the House ethics committee. The reason is that Setya misrepresented President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in the process of extending the contract of work of mining giant Freeport Indonesia.
This year, Indonesia and India mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. However, the ties between the two nations have existed much longer, predating the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of India. These connections span social, cultural, religious, economic, and trade aspects. But do those close ties of the past have any bearing on the present relationship? Why is there no direct flight between the capitals of the two countries?
Indian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Sandeep Chakravorty, shares his views on this matter at TEMPO TALKS.
