We are all being forced to get used to a brave new post-truth world. A Trump world of fake news. A world where blatant liesfor instance on the size of the crowd in Washington for the presidential inaugurationare 'alternative facts'.
Totalitarianism, militarism, fascism, colonialism and corporatism have all manipulated language and always will. George Orwell satirized this brilliantly in his novel Nineteen Eighty Four, first published in 1949, about a totalitarian state. Newspeak was the fictional state's controlled language designed to eliminate expressiveness and limit thought. In Newspeak, the word 'blackwhite', referred to the ability to believe that black is white, and to forget that you ever believed the contrary. A term totally pertinent today.
FATHER Carolus made the news last year, when a number of foreigners convicted of drug crimes were executed on Nusa Kambangan Island. Charles Patrick Edward Burrowsa priest known among locals as Romo (Father) Carolushad accompanied the inmates, among others Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte and Nigerian Okwudili Oyatanze, and watched them until the end.
"Usually, I open the Bible and read the following verse to death row inmates, 'Today you will be with me in paradise', so that they can die in dignity," the 73-year-old priest explained, in an interview last December.
Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir with his South Korean counterpart Lim Sung-nam hosted the first High Working Level Strategic Dialogue (HWLSD) between Indonesia and the Republic of Korea on February 6. President Joko Widodo's decision to grant Antasari Azhar clemency has raised questions. Convicted over the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, director of Putra Rajawali Banjaran company, Antasari feels he was made a scapegoat during the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Now, President Jokowi has apparently used his prerogative to undermine Yudhoyono, who still wields considerable political influence.
It is difficult to avoid the drama surrounding this clemency. Antasari, a former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has often claimed his case was engineered. So now, he has been invited to Merdeka Palace by Jokowi. Antasari, who was sentenced to 18 years in jail, has been out on parole since he was given remissions totaling 6 years. In jail since 2010, his sentence has been reduced by 4 and half years, meaning he is now a free man.
The plan of Constitutional Court Chief Justice Arief Hidayat, 61, to take some days off in his hometown of Semarang three weeks ago, was not to be. When he landed at Ahmad Yani Airport that Thursday morning, he was all set to go teach at the 17 Agustus 1945 University in the city. But a telephone call from Jakarta made him turn around and fly right back to Jakarta. But not before a journalist gave him the shock of his life, when he was asked to comment on a news report that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had arrested one of his judges.
That evening, back in Jakarta, Arief received confirmation that Patrialis Akbar, one of the Constitutional Court judges, had indeed been arrested. The charge against Patrialis was bribery involving a judicial review of Law No. 41/2014 on Livestock and Animal Health. Patrialis, who was justice and human rights minister from 2009 to 2011, was also accused of leaking the results of the judicial review, to Basuki Hariman, a beef trader who is suspected of bribing the judge. "Here we go again, another blunder," said Arief. This is the second time Arief has gone through such an incident. The first case involved Akil Mochtar, his predecessor, who was accused of accepting a bribe over a dispute on the results of the regional chief executives' elections in 2013.
THE government has proposed standardizing Friday prayer khatib (preachers or persons delivering sermons) to the House of Representatives (DPR). The proposal, said Minister for Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, is based on reports about certain preachers who might pose a threat to the unity of the muslim community. "We could use the most moderate standards," said the minister.
Lukman said Friday sermons would be used to discredit people, undermining the sermon's essential function to provide religious counsel. "This can potentially create disunity, especially in the midst of Indonesia's diversity," he said.
Truth has been dethroned. It has become chance. When we become sick to death witnessing polical campaigns that sell themselves agressively to the masses while mobilizing intellectuals considered respected and honest, but still speak full of passion and ignore slander and fake news then 'truth' seems to be tucked away somewhere. If we are lucky, we can find it.
But it is not all bad. Because from there we also witness human narrow mindedness and limitation in relating to truth precisely when truth is no longer on its high throne.
FOR Yeny Sunaria Haning, corn starch is not just good for making porridge or as a thickening agent for food. Mixed with breast milk, maizena or cornstarch becomes a supplementary food ingredient to help babies gain weight. "But the milk and corn starch mixture must be consumed regularly," said Yeny, who is Kupang City's Exemplary Nurse for 2015.
She noted that many babies in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, gained one to two kilograms after only one month of regularly consuming the milk and the cornstarch mixture. "The mix is high in carbohydrates and fiber," the 30 year-old said.

Undecided Jakarta voters will be an important factor in determining the winner of the election for governor of Indonesia's capital city next Wednesday. A number of surveys indicate that none of the three candidates are predicted to win more than 50 percent of the vote. That would mean a second round of voting.
Jose Manuel Barroso is adamant in his stance that the European Union remains a solid alliance of 28 member states, despite recent dramatic changes and serious challenges. In 2012, during his tenure as the 11th president of the European Commission, Barroso received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the EU's contribution towards peace and reconciliation.
Antasari Azhar says he no longer holds a grudge for the hard times he endured during his seven years in prisont. But Antasari still insists that the police reinvestigate the six-year old case. "I just want the truth," said the former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Antasari visited the Jakarta Police special crimes division on February 1, 16 days after he was granted clemency by President Joko Widodo for his involvement in the murder of Putra Rajawali Banjaran director, Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.
President Joko Widodo has put off the completion target for the light rail transit (LRT) project until 2019. "I want to make certain that the LRT project development can be finished on time, either in 2018 or slightly later, to 2019," said Joko Widodo when opening a limited cabinet meeting last Monday. One of the stumbling blocks involves project funding.
Today, only one pump at a fuel station at Jalan Ciater in South Tangerang sells Premium. In the past, the station had three Premium gasoline pumps, but the owner converted two of the three pumps for Pertalite.
Juan Tarin, chairman of the Indonesian Oil and Gas Entrepreneurs Association's (Hiswana Migas) regional executive board for Jakarta, West Java and Banten, said recently a number of gas stations had been eagerly adding more Pertalite pumps. "The number of Pertalite users continues to climb," he told Tempo.

This year, Indonesia and India mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. However, the ties between the two nations have existed much longer, predating the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of India. These connections span social, cultural, religious, economic, and trade aspects. But do those close ties of the past have any bearing on the present relationship? Why is there no direct flight between the capitals of the two countries?
Indian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Sandeep Chakravorty, shares his views on this matter at TEMPO TALKS.
