US$12 Million for Animal Conservation

The United States will forgive more than US$12 million in Indonesian debt so the state can better protect critically endangered species on the island of Sumatra.

The 'debt-for-nature' swap, enabled by the United States' Tropical Forests Conservation Act, will bolster protected areas, which often lack sufficient funding to be effective, said Ketut Putra, vice president of Conservation International Indonesia, a nonprofit group that brokered the deal.
