63 Percent of Muslim Teachers Intolerant

A research conducted by the Center for Islamic and Social Studies (PPIM) of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University has indicated that the majority of Muslim teachers in Indonesia are intolerant of other religious adherents. Based on a PPIM survey of 2,237 teachers, those maintaining the intolerant view constituted 63.07 percent of respondents. “The research aims at examining the pluralist view and attitude of school and madrasah (Islamic school) teachers in Indonesia,” said PPIM Executive Director Saiful Usman last Tuesday.

Fighting Intolerance

The Tolikara incidentwhich killed one person and injured 11 othersshows the failure of the government and religious leaders to prevent conflicts between followers of different faiths.

Dick Costolo, Twitter CEO
Indonesia is vital for us

When Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone in 2006, it was a very simple form of social media. Users only wrote about their activities. In the first tweet, Dorsey only wrote, "Just setting up my twttr." In less than 10 years, Twitter transformed itself into a forum for social networking, news provider, short message delivery and a venue for voicing out. Meanwhile in Indonesia, it proved to be an effective tool for political change. "We never imagined it," said Dick Costolo, Twitter's CEO, in a special interview with Tempo reporter Budi Setyarso two weeks ago at the Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, USA.

Costolo, 51, has been on the job since October 2010, when he took over from Evan Williams. He was recruited one year earlier from Google as the chief operating officer. At the end of last year, he led Twitter to become a public company, garnering Rp20.5 trillion in IPO sales. In the second quarter of this year, Twitter earned a total of US$312 million, most of it from advertising. This micro-blogging site can now be accessed by 270 million monthly active users, producing 500 million tweets a day. But Twitter today is experiencing slower growth.
