Indonesia to be Timor-Leste's Main Development Partner

President Joko Widodo made his first state visit to Timor-Leste on Tuesday, January 26, in a bid to strengthen relations between Indonesia and its former East Timor province. The President discussed ways to enhance cooperation with his Timorese counterpart, President Taur Matan Ruak and Prime Minister Maria de Araujo. He also offered Indonesia as Timor-Leste's main partner in development.

"I believe that Timor-Leste has the same commitment towards Indonesia," said Jokowi.

One Mario, Three Timors

Mario Viegas Carrascalao, 76 has been around since Timor-Leste was Portuguese. He was among the first 10 East Timorese to graduate from university during the 400 years of its colonization. In those days, he served as head of the Office of Agriculture and Forestry, then became a major player when the region was under Indonesian control from 1976 to 1999. After the referendum for Timor-Leste independence in 1999, Mario returned to his homeland, going on to become a member of its parliament and vice prime minister.

THE Finance Minister ordered Bank Mandiri to release a Rp1.2 trillion deposit of PT Timor Putra Nasional, a company owned by Tommy Suharto. This is the second round of the shady dealings over the sale of the debt collection right over PT Timor to Vista Bella Pratama—a firm which is said to be connected with Suharto’s youngest son.
